5,6-Dihydroxyindole (DHI) is an organic compound that is a precursor to melanin pigments, and is also known as aminochrome or dopamine lutine. It's an intermediate in the production of eumelanin, a dark brown or black bioaggregate of melanin pigments. DHI is formed from dopa and dopaquinone, and can be biosynthesized from L-dopachrome through the action of the enzyme tyrosinase. DHI can then be converted into indole-5,6-quinone, which is also catalyzed by tyrosinase. DHI can be metabolized to either eumelanin or pheomelanin, depending on the availability of cysteine.
