Ofloxacin (Cas 82419-36-1) Usage
Description |
Ofloxacin is an antibacterial agent that belongs to the fluoroquinolone class of antibiotics. It exhibits a broad spectrum of activity against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. |
Chemical Properties |
Off-White Solid |
Uses |
Ofloxacin has been approved for the treatment of various infections, including those of the lower respiratory tract, such as chronic bronchitis and pneumonia caused by gram-negative bacilli. It is also used for the treatment of pelvic inflammatory disease and is effective against gonococcal and chlamydial infections. Ofloxacin is used to treat urinary tract infections, including prostatitis, skin and soft tissue infections, and infections caused by Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, and Gram-negative bacilli. |
Definition |
ChEBI: An oxazinoquinolone carrying carboxy, fluoro, methyl and 4-methylpiperazino substituents. A synthetic fluoroquinolone antibacterial agent, it inhibits the supercoiling activity of bacterial DNA gyrase, halting DNA replication. |
Spectrum of Activity |
Ofloxacin is effective against a wide range of microorganisms. It has demonstrated good activity against enterobacteria, including strains resistant to nalidixic acid. It is also active against other bacteria such as Aeromonas, Campylobacter, Vibrio, and Moraxella spp. Ofloxacin shows good activity against methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus (Staph. aureus), but it is less effective against streptococci, including Streptococcus pneumoniae, and enterococci. |

, Drugs volume 33, pages346–391 (1987)
After oral administration of a single 300mg dose of ofloxacin a peak serum concentration of about 3 mg/L is reached within 2 hours. Multiple dose administration for up to 14 days in healthy subjects did not produce accumulation at a dosage of 300mg twice daily, with peak concentrations ranging from 3 to 6 mg/L on the final day.
